Bird related accidents (bird strikes) cost the aviation industry 1.2 billion dollars a year. BRDOs (Bird Repelling Drone Operation) are autonomous drones that are designed to be perceived by birds as natural predators.
Group project, showing my own work
Discovering that the most effective mean to prevent bird presence are trained dogs made us realize that creating a drone that is perceived as a predator would be the most effective way to repel birds while removing the need for workers driving around the runways. The design of the BRDO is meant to convey the three parts of its identity: Bird – Drone – Airport Officer.
Talking to bird control units, Airports Authority and Aviation Authority, it became clear that the design must allow individual adjustments to fit every airports operations and protocol. The safety of autonomous drones operating in a sensitive environment was also taken into consideration and tended to.
The BRDO project won the Targa Giovani certificate at COMPASSO D’ORO 2020, Milan
